The ancient land
of Mithila

Mithila — the kingdom of Janaka, the birthplace of Goddess Sita, the cradle of Madhubani art — has cradled Makhana in its sacred lotus ponds for millennia. Nestled in the wetlands of North Bihar, this region commands a geography so perfectly suited to Euryale ferox that 80% of the world's supply grows here and nowhere else.

The ponds are not farmed in the modern sense. They are tended — by families who have grown Makhana for generations, whose grandmothers painted the same lotus on mud walls that now blooms in the water outside. The land and its art share the same mother.

At Madmakhana, we don't just source from Mithila. We source Mithila — its earth, its water, its unhurried ancient wisdom.

Hand-Harvested at Dawn

Mithila farmers wade chest-deep into ponds before sunrise, gathering ripe Makhana seeds by hand — the same way their ancestors did for 6,000 years. No machine can replicate this care.

Sun-Dried Naturally

Harvested seeds are spread on earthen grounds and sun-dried for days under the open Bihar sky. This process preserves all natural nutrients and develops the texture that makes Mithila Makhana incomparable.

Madhubani Mithila painting — ancient folk art of Bihar

Five thousand
years of art.
Still alive
in every line.

The same hands that tend the lotus ponds of Madhubani district paint the lotus on the wall. The same fish that swims in the Makhana pond appears on the painting. Madhubani art and Makhana farming are not two traditions — they are one life.

Zero Processing, Zero Additives

What comes from the pond goes into your bag. No roasting, no oil, no salt, no flavourings, no preservatives. Pure Makhana exactly as nature designed it over millennia.

Organically Certified Wetlands

Our partner ponds are certified organic. No pesticide can even reach a plant growing in the middle of deep water. Grown as nature intended since ancient Mithila.

Fair-Trade Farmer Partnerships

We pay 30% above market rate to every farmer we work with. Prosperity for Mithila's farming families is non-negotiable. A thriving community means thriving Makhana.

Ancient Variety — Not Hybrid

We source only the traditional Mithila variety of Euryale ferox — not hybrid strains grown for volume. Better flavour, better nutrition, better story. The seed that fed Mithila for 6,000 years.

Small Batches, Maximum Freshness

Every pack dispatched within 15 days of harvest. We never overstock. Small-batch processing means you always get the freshest Makhana — not the oldest warehouse inventory.

Art born from
the same earth

Madhubani — the painting tradition of Mithila — is among the world's most ancient living art forms, recognised by the Government of India with a GI tag. Practiced by the same women whose families grow our Makhana, these motifs are not decoration. The lotus, the fish, the peacock — they are the language of Mithila's soul.

Our packaging art is drawn by Madhubani artists from Ranti village in Madhubani district — the village credited as the cradle of this art form. In buying Madmakhana, you support the art, the artist, and the ancient land they share.

"Our packaging carries Madhubani.
Our Makhana carries Mithila."
